Cantwell Ski Walk Circle Chulitna Broad Pass

 4 days

We had many ideas with predicted poor visibility or poor avalanche conditions (or good if you're an avalanche). Harder to just go no matter the weather in the winter. Because safety. So we went to Cantwell. I waited a little long to write this up, so hopefully this write up is still useful for my personal files.

We drove to Cantwell Saturday and parked at the pull-out where the Middle Fork of the Chulitna crosses under the road. We walked along flat areas and then down and up a few drainages, following the Middle Fork of the Chulitna now. We found a new area near water to camp, around 8-9 mi in.

The next morning we continued up where the Middle Fork of the Chulitna would be and turned right towards the Jack River. We saw 3 moose that took off very fast when they saw us, and climbed up a big pass to our right. I think they are used to getting hunted because they were not interested in being near us at all. After 10-11mi of skinning we camped near some water on the Jack River. It's cool to see the same spots in different season.

The third day we skinned up the pass and slowly down down, camping on the East Fork of the Chulitna near water after 12-13mi. The fourth day was 10-11mi back to the car, with some lower visibility after sunny days, and trying to make a straight line.

Sun protection is important and us trying to set up a new tent:
