4 days total, 3 days without the drive
Christina, Charlotte and I arrived in Valdez Friday but it was getting to be past midday, and the waves looked questionable. We decided to stay in Valdez for a night first. Saturday we woke up to calm seas and beautiful skies. We paddled out to Shoup Bay, taking a little over 3 hours to do the little over 9 miles.
We settled into the cabin and toured up above the cabin. There was some bushes and crust to navigate up through. When we got higher, the mountains were reflective in the calm ocean, and the powder was pretty good.
The next morning the visibility was not as great, so we paddled into the upper shoup bay was about to turn from incoming to outcoming, and was at a high point. We watched sea otters from a distance and visited the cabins. Most of the bay was frozen. We arrived back to lower shoup bay, having to paddle against the tide a little to make it out. We had heard the tide can be delayed here. We toured up in a different area, going past where we had started climbing up to the left yesterday. We did a mini lap in poor visibility, but the snow was great so we opted to go up higher. For the ski down, the visibility cleared the ocean views were great again.
