Thayer Hut Fall Backpack

2 days

Natalia and I did a little walk out to Thayer for fall colors. Initially there is a good trail along the right side of the river since Castner Glacier is a common area to check out. Crossing onto the glacier can involve some thinking to get over Castner Creek. We found a substantial ice and snow bridge over the glacier to pop on.

We then followed the moraine for 5-6 miles which was straight forward travel, and switch to microspikes to curve left onto the glacier. The first bit was very flat with minimal cracks.

We worked our way to the lookers left side of the glacier and had to do some navigating in this area. On the way out we hugged further left into the more lateral moraine features and had a faster and more straight forward time with this. In the winter, hugging this close to the left could put you under avy terrain, but I didn't have my winter eyes on.

We swung a bit above being in line with the hut along the glacier, since it was cliffy right below. Then we worked our way up the slope. Definitely an avalanche slope angle.

The hut was very cute and we slept on the bench head to toe, but obviously more could slept on the floor. Very grateful for all the work folks have put into these huts and fall colors!
