Ski Traverse Day Loop from Whittier

Liz and I set off the explore the area out of Whittier more. We worked our way up Whittier Glacier from the hotel apartment downtown ish type area. It was steep enough at the top to be avalanche terrain. When we got to the top it was slightly up hill and we travelled across the Whittier glacier to Burns Glacier. To get onto Burns there was a slow down. There were no tracks on Gaia to be found down to Portage Lake, and we haven't heard of anyone doing it. We skied downhill down the Burns Glacier which was awesome and definitely went.

Rounding the side of Portage Lake we saw huge avalanche debris (huge). We were unable to see where it came from, but a couple miles later we could see it broke way up high and smeared gulleys as it gained speed down. Pretty wild to look at the debris and given we were on a low angle slope without visible loading above us, could have mistaken this for non-avalanche terrain.

We skinned up to Portage pass and down the other side, and then walked back to our car along the road. Lotsa potential in this area.
